Scarce autograph letter signed ("Maurice Buckmaster") to Sir John Pollock, thanking him "for the Ms you kindly sent me" and adding "If a criticism may be permitted, I feel that, in your praise of de Gaulle, you perhaps rather underestimate the value of the work of men like Felix Gouin, Pierre Bloch. Jules Moch. Cusin and André Maliaux who were, I think, the real architects of French resistance, but who, because they were working with the British, are minimised by the de Gaulle clique [...] The real resisters in France recognised de Gaulle as the symbol & the flag, but they resented his detached superiority, and his assumption that any resister who was not in his recognised (and between ourselves relatively inefficient) groups was "working in the interests of a foreign power". In point of fact, the first resistance group formed in France was headed by General Cochet who was kicked out of his command later by the influence of Col. "Passy" (de Wavain) for being too British. The second group was that formed by a British officer in May 1941. The groups with British officers at their heads (there were over 200 such groups with picked men numbering tens of thousands) were ignored by de Gaulle, although they in fact accounted for more than 2/3rds of the sabotage effected and 4/5 of the effective work at and after D-day. On no less than 3 occasions the entire French de Gaulle underground organisation was "blown". The reason why the British on one occasion withdrew the facility for sending messages in one of our codes was that the French had allowed the enemy to capture two previous codes and were also using coded messages to further personal political ambitions. What I am trying to say is that by and large the French underground movement was undisciplined and ineffective, except when it worked under the guidance of a trained British (or a British-trained French) officer. De Gaulle was extremely intolerant of our methods and refused to recognise our work, although constantly receiving proof that the British were 100% honest in their work on behalf of France. He ended up by ordering 2 of their best British officers ignominiously out of France. On the other hand, the French in France loved, admired even worshipped the British officers who shared their dangers -not as de Gaulle's staff did, give advice from a "safe"? capital. Whilst I have every regard for a man like Médéric, who died nobly, or for Mme Aubrac, whom I knew well, I can't help feeling that the best of the French resisters were those who were recruited by our British officers & whose professed ambition was to have contact with Britain, who alone in July 1940 etc. etc. Entre parethèses, we recruited d'Asties de la Vigerie, but found him too hot-headed to be a reliable member of our organisation", four pages, mid-horizontal folding mark, light creasing, 8vo, 72 Pelham Court, London, 12 May 1946.

Buckmaster was transferred to the French Section of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in March 1941. Placed in charge of the SOE in September, he was given the task of building an organization that would carry out acts of sabotage, gather information on the enemy and providing money and equipment to the French Resistance. 20.5 x 12.5cm

Group of letters regarding Richard Pigott's involvement in forging the evidence that Charles Stewart Parnell of the Irish National Land League had been sympathetic to the perpetrators of the Phoenix Park Murders. Including: a letter from Pigott to Dr. William Joseph Walsh, Archbishop of Dublin, reading in part "I am now informed , however, that your Grace has consented to come forward as a witness before the Parnell Commission and give evidence as to the Contents of these letters. ...I need hardly assure your Grace that unless I had the strongest and most satisfying proof that this assertion is well grounded, I would not given it the utmost strength...But when I tell your Grace - as I do now in Confidence- that my informant is Mr Labouchère himself who assured me he had two statements from Mr Parnell himself, you could see that I have some weight of authority. This gentleman...is working for Mr P. and for the accused persons, and is daily in communication with the solicitors and Council employed for his defence. Moreover, Mr. Labouchère used this monstrous allegation - that your Grace intended to reveal secrets sacred as these sealed in the Confessional, as a thread to induce me to give certain evidence before the Commission that would in fact be false", three pages, 9 December 1888; a letter sent from the Archbishop of Dublin saying "You may remember that when writing to me immediately before the appearance of the first of the Times abstracts you stated that you were in possession of information the possession of which by Mr Parnell would enable him to meet the attacks that were about to be made upon him. This being so, I cannot but feel that you are responsible in a very large measure for all the trouble and confusion...and for the enormous cost which it has now become necessary to undergo in the interest of truth and justice" and requests "that no further correspondence should take place between us until you have done something substantial to set yourself right in this most unpleasant matter", three pages, marked 'Copy', 12 December 1888; Pigott's reply "Now I learn, on the authorities of the gentlemen whose names I have already given you, that your Grace has consented to testify before the Commission that I confessed to you that I forged the letters, that are alleged to be spurious, as well as supplied other material for the Times attacks on Mr Parnell and his followers. Your Grace is aware that I made no such confession to you...and I know that it must be false to assert that your Grace has consented to give such evidence, but am I too presumptuous in expecting that your Grace will favour me with an authoritative contradiction of this falsehood?", three pages, 13 December 1888; also including: a letter to Sir Charles Russell from a Jane Diaz, asking to attend the Special Commission (set up by the British Government to investigate the claims accusing Parnell to condone the Phoenix Park murders), 24 February 1889; a letter to Sir Charles Russell from Ernest Franklin, reading in part "I venture to suggest that very probably Piggott, instead of writing himself the forged letters merely took out portions of them with acid and filled up the blanks with other words written to imitate the original hand writing", two pages, 24 February 1889; and a letter to Russell from the Archbishop of Dublin, reading "Enclosed are the last letters. I cannot find my copy (or rather draft) of my reply to the last. It was an assurance to him that he had not 'in any of his numerous communications to me' stated that he was the author of the forged or as I said, the fabricated letter", three pages, 23 February 1885. (6)
***In 1886 Richard Piggott sold fake information in the form of letters to the Irish Loyal and Patriotic Union, an anti-Home Rule organisation, which implicated Charles Stewart Parnell and his associates with involvement in two appalling murders in Dublin’s Phoenix Park which had generated so much publicity at that time. Pigott’s intention was to destroy Parnell’s political career, but his efforts were to backfire to such an extraordinary extent that he ended up taking his own life rather than face the consequences of his actions.

Autograph letter signed ("Reg Kray") on personalised stationery, to a recipient called Bob, saying in part "I'm happy here", two pages, folding marks, annotations in another hand, 4to, n.d.; together with: a letter to an autograph collector called Peter from Leonard Ernest Nipper Read (responsible for the conviction of the Kray twins), reading in part "When I first joined the police force in 1947, the Station was ruled by a man with the now obsolescent rank of Station Sergeant. These were very obviously selected to form a breed of men which are now as outmoded as the rank they held. All were tyrannical in the way they controlled the Station with an iron discipline and many wore old fashioned thirty style walrus moustaches. Livingstone (David)
A lock of David Livingstone's Hair and a piece of the bark case in which his body was brought back from Africa, together with two autograph notes of authentification, signed by Horace Waller on Twywell Rectory note paper, the first reading "The enclosed is a portion of the hair of Dr. David Livingstone. It was removed by me when an examination of his remains was made at the rooms of the R. Geographical Society previous to the burial in Westminster Abbey. Presented to Mr. Joseph A. Williams 6.1.92 Horace Waller", the second reading "The enclosed is a piece of the bark case in which Dr. Livingstone's body was brought from the Interior of Africa to the Coast by his servants Chuma Susi and others. Horace Waller.", preserved in a later book box with morocco spine.
***After several wretched months of fever and dysentery, stoically endured in his misplaced search for the Nile's source, Livingstone, the missionary-explorer died on the night of 30 April 1873, in a village located in present-day Zambia. There his African attendants acted with a calm decisiveness by eviscerating the body, burying the heart, and allowing the rest to dry for 14 days in the sun before wrapping it in layers of calico, bark and sailcloth, sealed with a coating of tar before its 1,000-mile journey to the coast. The trip took nine months in tropical heat through difficult terrain. Horace Waller (1833-1896 anti-slavery activist, missionary and clergyman), who had known Livingstone at home and in Africa, and edited his Last Journals, took the lock of hair at the rooms of the Royal Geographical Society then in Savile Row. His body had been brought back from Africa by his faithful servants Chuma and Susi, and prior to the burial in Westminster Abbey an examination of his remains was made at the Society's headquarters. The funeral took place in Westminster Abbey on 18th April 1874. Before the ceremony a short service was performed by the Scottish Presbyterian minister Mr Hamilton. Dean Stanley conducted the funeral and Jacob Wainwright, who had escorted the body from Africa, threw a palm branch into the grave. Queen Victoria sent a wreath to be placed on the coffin and this was buried with him. The very large congregation mainly consisted of Nonconformist ministers, representatives of learned societies and the general public, with Livingstone's four children. A choirboy recalls that H.M. Stanley had to restrain Livingstone's faithful servant from throwing himself into the grave. The grave is in the center of the nave and has the following inscription - BROUGHT BY FAITHFUL HANDS OVER LAND AND SEA HERE RESTS DAVID LIVINGSTONE, MISSIONARY, TRAVELLER, PHILANTHROPIST, BORN MARCH 19. 1813 AT BLANTYRE, LANARKSHIRE, DIED MAY 1, 1873 AT CHITAMBO'S VILLAGE, ULALA. FOR 30 YEARS HIS LIFE WAS SPENT IN AN UNWEARIED EFFORT TO EVANGELIZE THE NATIVE RACES, TO EXPLORE THE UNDISCOVERED SECRETS, TO ABOLISH THE DESOLATING SLAVE TRADE, OF CENTRAL AFRICA, WHERE WITH HIS LAST WORDS HE WROTE, "ALL I CAN ADD IN MY SOLITUDE, IS, MAY HEAVEN'S RICH BLESSING COME DOWN ON EVERY ONE, AMERICAN, ENGLISH, OR TURK, WHO WILL HELP TO HEAL THIS OPEN SORE OF THE WORLD".
