CARL LUDVIG MESSMANN (COPENHAGEN 1826-1893 GOTHENBURG) Study of trees signed or inscribed ' Messmann.' on the verso, inscribed ' Messmann. del' on the old mount collector's mark (lower right, L.420). pencil, with framing lines in brown ink 13.8 x 19.3 cm Provenance Benjamin Wolff, Engelholm, Denmark (L. 420), with his drystamp at the lower right. Thence by descent until 2018. Carl Ludvig Ferdinand Messmann was a Danish landscape draughtsman, painter and lithographer. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen between 1840 and 1844. Among his favoured subjects were the nature and countryside around the Danish capital. By 1852 Messmann had settled in Roskilde, on the island of Zealand. He exhibited landscape paintings and pencil drawings, several of which were purchased by King Frederik VII, between 1850 and 1859. In 1857 he moved to Sweden. He died in Gothenburg in 1893. Drawings and paintings by Messmann are today in the collections of the Museum of Copenhagen and the Øregård Museum near Copenhagen, as well as the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Malmö Konstmuseum in Malmö.

Notes: The work is a preparatory drawing for Procaccini’s oil painting of Rebecca at the Well in the Santa Maria di Canepanova Pavia, Lombardy. This was one of two canvasses completed (the other being Mary, sister of Moses) by Procaccini between 1620 and 1623 as part of the cycle of eight depicting Old Testament biblical heroines. The other six works were completed by four other artists; Giulio Cesare Procaccini (1574-1625), Alessandro Tiarini (1577-1668) and Guglielmo Caccia called il Moncalvo (1568-1625).

Influenced by the Rococo tradition, characterised by lightness, elegance, and an emphasis on decorative arts. However, as his career progressed, he also incorporated elements of Neoclassicism, a style that emphasised simplicity, order, and a return to classical ideals.
Mallet is best known for his genre scenes, paintings that depict scenes of everyday life, often in domestic settings. His works frequently portray women engaged in activities such as reading, writing, or embroidering, set within richly detailed interiors. These scenes are characterised by their intimate atmosphere, attention to detail, and delicate colour palette, as can be seen in this example.
